Checklist
Panhellenic Association at Texas Tech University
Fall Formal Recruitment 2012: August 18-24, 2012
Days of Recruitment & Attire
Overview
Eleven National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) sororities will participate in Fall Formal Recruitment. Recruitment is an ongoing process of mutual selection during which you and the sorority choose each other. During Recruitment, you will have the opportunity to visit each of the sororities. As Recruitment progresses, the number of events each day decreases, and the amount of spent time in each event increases.
Recruitment Kick-Off: Saturday, August 18th
This will be an informational session for everyone registered for Fall Formal Recruitment. Parents are also welcome to attend! You will receive information concerning Recruitment, and will meet your Rho Gammas and Recruitment Group. This is NOT a recruiting day-however, attendance is absolutely imperative! Please plan on attending, and feel free to wear comfortable clothes, as most of you will be moving in to your residence halls.
Period One (Part I): Sunday, August 19th
Period One (Part II): Monday, August 20th
Period Two: Tuesday, August 21st
Period Three: Wednesday, August 22nd
Preference Night: Thursday, August 23rd
Bid Day: Friday, August 24th
Attire Notes :
- Please note that each day's attire is slightly dressier in nature.
- During Recruitment, it will be hot, and comfortable shoes are a must.
- Also, please keep in mind that you are attending events to meet other young women whose attire will be appropriately conservative. Clothing should match the tone of the events, and be appropriate for a variety of physical situations (ex.: walking, sitting, kneeling, etc.)
Mutual Selection Process
How you make your choices:
- Starting Sunday, at the conclusion of every day, you will meet with your Rho Gammas and will rank all eleven sororities in order of your preference at the Library computer lab.
- Therefore, you will not ever “cut” or “release” a sorority.
- The next day you will receive invitations to Recruitment events one hour prior to the first event.
How the sororities make their choices:
- Sororities make their choices based on academic, leadership, and community service accomplishments and on the conversations you had with their members during the event.
- The sorority women also look for PNMs that appear to uphold and value their sorority’s membership requirements and founding values.
- At the end of each day, the entire sorority will approve the women receiving invitations for the following day.
Rho Gamma Information
During Fall Formal Recruitment week, you will be placed with a group of other Potential New Members and your Recruitment Group will be assigned Recruitment Counselors or more commonly referred to as Rho Gammas. Each Rho Gamma is a member of the sorority community at Texas Tech and will meet with you daily during the week of Recruitment. Your Rho Gamma will be able to personally answer questions about Recruitment and will assist with any problems that may arise.
Your Rho Gamma's primary purpose is to help you experience Recruitment in the most positive way possible and to help answer any questions you may have. Your Rho Gammas will have no contact with any sorority during Recruitment, and can be relied on to keep any problems or questions confidential.
It is important that you attend all meetings with your Rho Gammas, as they will have important information for you.
Rho Gammas are individuals who are committed to making sure you have the best Recruitment experience possible.

Recommendation Letters
Letters of Recommendation/Reference
Recommendation letters are an OPTIONAL step in the recruitment process and are NOT REQUIRED to participate in the recruitment process. If a chapter desires a recommendation letter, it is ultimately the chapter's responsibility to obtain the recommendation.
Potential New Members MUST register with the Texas Tech Panhellenic Council even if you register with a local Alumnae Panhellenic Association. And we still need you to mail TTU Panhellenic the requested pictures and transcripts!
Forms for letters of reference/recommendation can usually be found on the national organization's website or in the national magazine.
For any questions concerning the alumnae organization's Recruitment or letters of reference/recommendation, they should contact their chapter directly.
Letters of reference should be mailed by the Alumna writing the reference directly to the sororities at Texas Tech University. Please address all envelopes "Attention: Recruitment Reference Chair" Addresses are below:

Recruitment Rules/PNM Bill Of Rights
FAQs
Who is eligible for Recruitment?
- A woman is eligible to participate in Recruitment and join a sorority if she is enrolled at Texas Tech University as a full-time student. A full-time student is defined as having 12 credit hours per semester, excluding correspondence courses and courses at other universities.
- She must not be a new or initiated member of any National Panhellenic Conference Sorority.
How do I register for Recruitment?
- To register with Texas Tech University Panhellenic, you must submit your application and pay on-line. You must also mail in all of the information requested on the Registration Checklist.
- You may also register with your Area Alumnae Panhellenic. By registering with your area Alumnae Panhellenic, you have an opportunity to meet alumnae from your area, attend an orientation session, and gain assistance in obtaining reference letters.
When is Fall Formal Recruitment for 2012?
- Fall Formal Recruitment will begin with the Recruitment Kick-Off on Saturday, August 18.
- Recruitment events will take place from August 19 to August 24.
What kind of grade point average do I need?
- Although the Panhellenic Association does not require a specific GPA to participate in Recruitment, the individual chapters establish their own requirements. The chapters strongly adhere to these grade requirements.
- Both high school and college grade requirements for sororities start at approximately 3.0.
- Sororities were founded primarily upon principles of academic excellence, and this is a primary consideration in membership selection.
How many letters of reference/recommendation do I need?
- It is not required that you obtain reference letters to participate in Recruitment. The responsibility for providing reference letters rests with alumnae. Joining a sorority is not necessarily contingent upon alumnae sponsorship.
- For more information on reference letters/letters of recommendation, please contact your local Area Alumnae Panhellenic.
What does being a “legacy" mean for my Recruitment process?
- Being a legacy of a group does not ensure membership in that group. It is important to note a sorority is not obligated to offer a bid to a legacy, and a potential new member is not obligated by anyone to commit to a chapter where they are a legacy.
- There are no Panhellenic regulations covering legacies. Legacy regulations are chapter specific.
- Please remember the ultimate decision to join a chapter rests with the potential new member. The potential new member should not make a decision or be under pressure based on her legacy chapter affiliation.
Do I need to send a copy of my high school or college transcript?
- Transcript information coming soon.
Are my SAT/ACT scores important?
- The chapters will take into account a participant's SAT/ACT scores along with her high school/college grades.
- If a Potential New Member's scores/grades are low, the chapters will have concern for the possibility of the Potential New Member experiencing difficulty in managing the time commitment required for New Member Education and a busy school schedule.
Should I attend Red Raider Orientation?
- Yes! Red Raider Orientation allows you to pre-register for classes and become acquainted with the campus. A session on Greek Life will be presented as a program during Orientation.
- We advise you attend a Greek Life Orientation session and visit with the Panhellenic Council and/or Sorority Advisor during Red Raider Orientation, and we look forward to seeing you there!
Can I take IS 1100 Freshman Seminar and participate in Recruitment?
- Unfortunately, the IS 1100 schedule and Recruitment schedules will not allow you to participate in both events prior to classes starting. You will not be able to participate in sorority Recruitment if you register for IS 1100's corridor session scheduled for the week before classes start.
- We definitely recommend enrolling in the class during the Fall semester to gain the knowledge and benefits of participation in IS 1100.
Can I go through Recruitment as an upperclassman?
- Yes. As long as you have not accepted a bid from an NPC sorority in the past calendar year, or been initiated into an NPC sorority, you may go through Recruitment.
Where do I live during Recruitment week?
- You will live where you plan to reside during the school year. All University residence halls will be open for participants.
- Individuals who have registered for Formal Recruitment may move into the residence halls on Saturday, August 18th beginning at 10:00 a.m.
Do I need a car for Recruitment events?
- NO! Because Greek Circle is located off-campus, the Panhellenic Council will provide transportation to and from all Recruitment events.
- All Potential New Members are required to utilize the buses provided for transportation to and from Recruitment events.
How much time does a sorority take?
- There is a required meeting once a week where you receive information of chapter events and learn fraternity history. New members have a separate weekly meeting to learn more about their new sorority or fraternity. Weekly chapter study sessions are a programming option for all members.
- In addition, weekend events like sisterhood activities, community service projects, and social events are also an option. Remember, the more you put into the sorority, the more you will get out of it.
How much is a sorority going to cost?
- Each Potential New Member should be aware of the financial responsibilities of sorority life before joining a sorority.
- On average, the first semester of sorority membership is twice as expensive as the following semesters.
- During the New Member Education semester, dues at Texas Tech range from $900 to $1,550.
- Semester dues for initiated/active members range from $700 to $900.
- These costs exclude sorority paraphernalia such as shirts, jewelry, and other items.
- Sororities typically ask for dues payments at the beginning of the semester. Payment plans and scholarships are also available.
Spring Recruitment
Spring 2012 Panhellenic Sorority Recruitment
The Spring Recruitment Information Session will take place Wednesday, February 1st in the Matador Room of the Student Union Building at 6pm. There is no formal registration process as Spring Recruitment is much more informal than Fall Recruitment.
Recruitment events will take place by invitation from participating sororities at the time and location of the sorority's choice. There is not a pre-assigned schedule nor will the Panhellenic Executive Council facilitate the invitation process. Spring Recruitment is much more informal and relaxed than Fall.
Sororities that are below chapter total are eligible to take members in the spring semester, however it is the chapter's perogative to invite women to join their organization. The exact sororities that meet this requirement will not be known until closer to the spring and will be announced at the information session. Not all sororities will have available spots in their membership numbers, but 6-10 is usual.
