Act!Speak!Build! Week

2012-04-03

Act! Speak! Build! Week is Habitat’s international, student-initiated week of advocacy. Act! Speak! Build! Week empowers young people to educate themselves and their communities and move people to social action. Young people, ages 5 to 25, work in partnership with local affiliates to plan and host events focused on ending poverty housing.

Throughout the week, Tech students will participate in various events and educate themselves on the issue of affordable housing.

Humans Versus Zombies!

It's that wonderful time of year again: The time when Tech students don their lime green bandanas, select their nerf arsenals, and run around campus in a week long game of tag!

For those of you who do not know about HvZ, it is a week long game of tag based on the idea of a zombie infection. Every player begins as a human with the exception of one Zombie. When a zombie tags a human, the Human becomes a zombie.

Cell Phones for Soldiers

2012-04-05

The Veterans Association at Texas Tech will be collecting cell phones to be recycled and refurbished. Each cell phone collected is cleaned of all data and is worth one hour of phone calls for a service member overseas. We often take our freedoms for granted, and who doesn't have at least one old cell phone stashed in a drawer at home? We will be collecting phones at various events sponsored by the Tech Activities Board as well as outside the SUB. Check Tech announce for the specific days or drop off your old phone anytime at the MVP office in Doak Hall.

A 4 Round Swiss System Tournament (Game/30)
Event Site: Texas Tech University, Student Union, Matador Room in Lubbock, TX

Description of Event: Individual and Team Scholastic Championship with rated and unrated sections.
Games are played in six sections: Primary (K-2), Elementary (K-5), Middle School (K-8), High School (K-12) (no USCF membership required) and two Rated “Championship” sections K-5 and K-12. There is a total of 30 minutes maximum per player per game.
On-site registration and check in 8:30am-10:00am. All players must check in by 10:15am. Later arrival will receive a ½ point bye for the first round. Registration is limited to the first 150 entries.
Round schedule: 10:30am -11:45am-1:15pm and 2:30pm.
Entry Fees: $10 received by 4/2; $15 received by 4/13, or on site $20. No USCF membership required except in the Rated “Championship” sections. Membership can be obtained at www.uschess.org or onsite on 4/14 until 10am.
Prizes: Trophies for top 3 finishers in each section. Trophies to top 3 school teams in each section.
Special valuable chess prizes to the top overall finisher in each section sponsored by the Susan Polgar Foundation! Team prizes are based on the top 3 individual scores from the same school within the same section. Prize giving ceremony will be held shortly after the end of the last game which is around 3:45pm or perhaps sooner.
Chess boards and sets will be provided. Bring a chess clock if you have one.

Black & Hispanic Knowledge Bowl

The Black & Hispanic Knowledge Bowl is a Mentor Tech Student Organization tradition that promotes diversity and cultural awareness. It is open to all faculty, staff, and students at Texas Tech University.

Teams consist of 4 people with 1 alternate (5 total)
There will be a cash prize for 1st of 200 dollars & 2nd place gets 150.
Your team will be provided with a study packet with rules and sample questions.

Food will be provided at the event for volunteers & participants.

The Academy is a one-day training session that teaches student leaders how to make their organization a meaningful experience for its members. “The West Texas Young Adult Summit” is a student organized event on the Texas Tech campus. It is unique to Texas Tech University and Lubbock Texas. The Summit will bring attention to REAL issues and concerns, educate, initiate discussions, and empower participants. The speakers selected for the summit bring expertise and knowledge. Speaker will advocate for issues through educational perspectives, current information, and real life experiences. The keynote speaker will address participants on perseverance through the power of higher education.
